I'm Charlotte, a 22 year old composer based in Cardiff, Wales. In 2014, I was diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome (TS), an incurable neurological movement disorder that causes involuntary movements and sounds called tics.
Treatment is limited for TS as there are no specific medications for the condition. I sought alternative treatments and therapies and found people in the US who have service dogs trained to assist them with their Tourette's.
Getting an assistance dog in the UK is not a straightforward process and dogs for TS have not yet been trained by the assistance dog charities in the UK. I got an 11 week old Golden Retriever, Lexi, in 2015 and after a lot of training, 3 years later she reached assistance dog standard.
Lexi is now 6 years old and without her, I wouldn't be living the life I am today.
I've started this blog to share the adventures Lexi and I are going on over the next few years, how to navigate the world with a wheelchair and an assistance dog, and how to live a normal life with Tourette's Syndrome.
